How to Give Yourself a Buzz Cut

You may be wondering how to cut your own buzz. So, you should be aware that there aren't many DIY buzz cuts we recommend.

A lot of guys became comfortable with DIY at-home buzz cuts because of the pandemic era (whether it was with hacked kitchen haircuts or not having them at all).

And many of you excelled at it. There's always the option of sharing it all off and starting over, pandemic or not.

The buzz cut is a sharp appearance for everyone. Whether you're embracing hair loss or just like the way short hair looks on you. It also requires very little shaping and is simple to keep clean and fresh-looking.

But before you run out and buy a beard trimmer, make sure you know how to give yourself a buzz cut properly.

Make sure you have high-quality hair clippers.

The hair on your head is considerably more tightly compacted than even the thickest beards, therefore a beard trimmer will virtually never be powerful enough to remove it. So instead of constantly starting and stopping, get yourself an easy-to-use clipper that can quickly and effortlessly buzz your hair in one smooth motion.

To make things even better, the guards will be far more adept at manoeuvring around the curves of your skull while remaining unnoticed by onlookers. Theoretically, you can use a hair clipper on your beard, but it won't be as nimble in spots like your upper lip. Also, if you don't already have one, get a handheld mirror to help you with the sides and back of the face. Blind spots, much like motorway driving, can be quite hazardous.

Take a shower and examine your scalp.

You should have freshly cleaned hair for the cut, just like when going to the barber. Doing so guarantees that the hairs are lying flat and unstyled—not curled or ruffled in any way. Furthermore, slicing through product-clogged hair is much more difficult. So, give everything a good shampoo, but save the conditioner till after you've thoroughly rinsed away all the trimmings.

After that, we advise that you do a thorough examination of your scalp. In other words, keep an eye out for things like moles, skin tags, scars, and so on. Consider letting the guard down a notch or two if you're going to be buzzing this near. It's best if we don't get into any Sweeney Todd-type problems in this position.

Those who are just starting out: Buzz for a little longer than you expected.

First-timers should proceed with caution: you can always cut more, but you can never add anything back once you've trimmed the hair back down. To begin, use a half-inch #5 and see how it looks with a quarter-inch buzz, a #3 guard. If you still want it shorter, work your way down from there. When you initially start out, go slowly and steadily.

Go the other way on the lateral planes.

We recommend buzzing the hair in the opposite direction of its development so that as you cut it, you are pulling the hair upward. By buzzing against the grain, some of the longer hairs may be able to rest and not be shaved. Start with the sideburns and work your way up, going against the grain of your hair.

We suggest you start at the rear of the head and work your way up through the crown. To ensure that your clipper cuts smoothly, take a moment to wipe it out.

The next step is to focus on the very top.

After you've finished the sides, it's time to tackle the top of the head. Here's the catch: the grain of your hair gets a lot more tangled and is difficult to follow up there. That gives you free rein to have a good time and mow as much as you like. After the first pass, go back and forth with the clipper. Do it again, but this time from the other side. Continue until the problem is resolved.

Do a quick spot check or run the entire process again with a smaller setting

Make a smaller guard at the beginning and work your way down. You'll have to go around the dome at least a dozen times to be certain you don't miss anything.

Even if you're happy with how long your hair is, you should still spot-check your entire head for any stray hairs that stick out. Snip them using a pair of scissors when necessary or buzz them when not.

If you dare, fade the ends

We'll be honest with you: attempting to achieve a nice fade around your entire dome is not something we recommend. A barber goes to school to learn how to do this, and you're just a dude with a huge blind spot in the back of your head.

A fade can be tricky if you're not willing to cope with the likely outcome of the remedy (an even shorter buzz) or you're in the company of a confident roommate/partner who can handle the neckline in the back.

We suggest reducing the size of one of your guards. We think you may have someone else handle the neckline and buzz the sideburns and ears on this length. You can even go down one more guard size and snip just a little bit into that line to get things even closer to the perimeter if you want to go that route. Any higher and you'll end up with a shelf of unattractive hair built up—the only alternative is to make that your new starting point for the buzz. However, the good news is that it will most likely grow out within a week or two.

Make sure you and your clippers are both clean before using them again.

If your clippers don't have one, use a spare toothbrush to remove the hair clippings. To protect the metal components from catching on each other, some oil would have been nice. After you've finished buzzing, clean the blade thoroughly and apply a small amount of oil to it according to the manufacturer's instructions. Rinsing the blade underwater will cause rust to form on your expensive buzzers, so avoid doing it.

After that, take a shower to get the grime off. After a few minutes of letting your new haircut dry (which goes by quickly), do a final spot check and snip any remaining hairs that stick out.

STYLING AND MAINTAINING THE BUZZCUT:

Make sure your blades are in good condition. After using the blade, make sure all hair is removed. Keep the security guards organised and clean. Put all the parts in a case with the clippers and keep them safe. Every time you use the blade, add a few drops of oil to it. When not in use, keep the clippers' blades covered with a guard. Consult your user's manual to see if your blades require any special attention. Your clippers may begin to cut unevenly and pull on your hair after a period of time. If this is the case, your blades need to be either sharpened or replaced.

1. Styling your hair requires the use of hair gel or wax. Apply a small quantity of gel or wax to the top of your head to style buzz cuts that are shorter in length. Distribute the product evenly through your hair by running your fingers through it. This will give it a more natural appearance while also amplifying its flavour. Use a blow dryer to spike up hair that has been trimmed longer than an inch after it has been damp. After blow-drying your hair, add a dab of hair wax or cream for more hold or structure.
2. Make sure you've not overheated. Always put the clippers away when you've finished cutting with them. When using clippers, be aware of how hot they get. Some clippers can burn your hands if they get too hot during cutting. Always switch them off and wait for a few minutes if you see this occurring to yours. This will prolong the life of your clippers.
